Alpha Star Shipping Successfully Handles 845-Tonne OOG Power-Generation Cargo from UAE to Gabon

Recently, G7 member Alpha Star Shipping Dubai successfully handled the transportation of power-generation equipment for a 40 MW gas power plant from the UAE to Gabon via Oman. The shipment comprised approximately 845 tonnes across 40 packages, transported on 30 trailers, with individual heavy loads reaching up to 116 tonnes.

The cargo included turbine and generator units, control-room equipment, and associated accessories. The project required cross-border road transportation from the UAE to Oman, followed by onward sea shipment to Gabon, with the original ocean loading plan set for Sohar Port, Oman.

Alpha Star Shipping managed the road transportation and cross-border customs clearance, while coordinating the specialist requirements for the heavy and out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo. This included Ministry of Transport heavy-load permits and Royal Oman Police escorts for the relevant movements.

The project presented several challenges, including geopolitical tensions that contributed to port congestion and prolonged berthing delays. With berth unavailability at Sohar Port, the detention period extended to one month. During this period, Alpha Star coordinated with drivers and transport providers to ensure all 30 loaded trailers, including specialist heavy-cargo equipment, remained available and ready while developing an alternative loading solution.

The eventual solution involved relocating both the vessel and all 30 cargo-laden trailers to Port Sultan Qaboos in Muscat, Oman. Alpha Star coordinated the revised road movement and customs requirements while working with port stakeholders to arrange a berth and vessel agency support at the alternative port.

The cargo was subsequently loaded and discharged in Gabon, completing a complex international project that required close coordination across road transportation, customs, port operations, permits, escorts, and specialist equipment.

This project highlights G7 members’ experience in heavy-cargo logistics, cross-border operations, and contingency planning, while also reflecting the diverse capabilities and expertise within the G7 Logistics Networks community.
